In honor of my 2 initial Soundcloud accounts reaching 500 Followers recently. I have decided to do 2 edits....Kashif's "Lover Turn Me On" and "Stone Love".Back in the day Kashif's material was all over the airwaves and dance floors. Whether it was the likes of Evelyn King, Melba Moore, George Benson or just his solo stuff...his sound was hard to ignore (and impossible not to like).
Both were huge hits and song that I loved to play whenever I had the chance. At first the plan was to do just one song, then one became two and there you go. Here are the specifics of the edits.... There were more than a few years in the early 80's where Kashif was literally "The Man" in regards to writing and producing hit R&B tracks. I mean come one..."Love Come Down" is amazing to this day! Love's Comin At Ya is unmistakably one of those tracks and one of Melba Moore's biggest hits.
I took the 12" version and decided to keep it Old Skool simple with no rhythm enhancements and no over the top effects. I just used the existing material and created an Intro/Outro and rearranged some of the body of the song. The only think I did do was to lock the tempo at 115 BPM. I love the Kashif sound and I have yet to do an edit of his solo material...but one is coming. Until then I hope you enjoy this very simple and very DJ Friendly edit :) Track Info: Melba Moore - Love's Comin' At Ya (Digital Visions Re-Edit) Created: April 2014 Time: 6:11 BPM: 115 Intro: 32 Beats Outro: 32/32 Beats End: Cold Recently I've heard quite a few of Chaka Khan's pre "Ain't Nobody" tracks on the online radio station at work, which has got me inspired to work on one or two.....
"What Cha' Gonna Do For Me" was Produced by 11 time Grammy winner Arif Mardin (who successfully Produced literally hundreds of artists covering virtually all musical genres), this is a great example of early 80's R&B....which became the influence for so much of the late 80's British Soul that was so incredibly popular. Prior to 1983 this was one of Chaka Khan's biggest hits, then in 1983 "Ain't Nobody" followed in 1984 by the mega-hit "I Feel For You" virtually buried her previous works. Now tracks like this are generally only heard in rotation on Online Classic Soul stations. I took the original version (as there was no long version) and gave it just a bit more length via an Intro/Outro. I also felt that a slightly more aggressive rhythm track was appropriate along with some subtle effects. Finally I tempo corrected the track (which ranged from 105 at the beginning to 108 at the end) to a solid 108 BPM. I truly hope you guys dig listening and using this classic R&B Jam as much as I did creating it.... .....Enjoy!! :) Track Info: Chaka Khan - What Cha' Gonna Do For Me (Digital Visions Re-Edit) Created: April 2014 Time: 5:20 BPM: 108 Intro: 32 Beats Outro: 32/32 Beats End: Cold My latest edit is of the Top 10 International R&B/Pop Classic from 1977-78 by the group Raydio (featuring Ray Parker Jr)......"Jack & Jill".
My inspiration for edits comes from many places; sometimes from hearing a song on the radio or TV, sometimes from requests and other times just from playing (or wanting to play) it during on of my LiveStreams. In this case it came from both hearing it on an internet radio station and playing an edit I had found awhile back in a LiveStream. The edit started with a good idea but the creator had an impossible time keeping the overlayed beat in sync with the original track. The beat drifting varied from OK to Train Wreck so it was awkward to play live, especially since I tend to be a perfectionist when I mix. The song is a catchy tune...made even more so as its a more adult play on the old Jack & Jill Nursery Rhyme. As a re-edit the song didn't require much from me. It was well constructed already, only requiring a usable Intro/Outro. As always I attempt to upgrade the rhythm track as to give it a slightly more modern sonic feel while not trying to "re-invent the wheel" so to speak. After all if it isn't broke...don't fix it. Most of the foundation of the edit was hashed out and created in Adobe Audition 3.0, then transferred to Abelton Live 9 for post. Once there I began the task of finalizing the re-assembly of the track, adding subtle layers of effects along with Tempo Correction. All the while I am constructing a suitable rhythmic upgrade using Fruity Loops 11. In the end the edit turned out about as well as I had hoped. And based on the comments ob Soundcloud it looks like you guys think so too! Edit Info..... Raydio - Jack & Jill (Digital Visions Re-Edit) Created: April 2014 Time: 5:56 BPM: 109 Intro: 32/32 Beats Outro: 32/32 Beats End: Cold Comments are welcomed, provided they are of the constructive variety.... Occasionally, when time permits, I will take on an Edit Request from a DJ or Soundcloud/YouTube/Facebook Follower. Every month I get dozens of requests vie messages, comments and email....and I consider virtually all of them. In fact some of my most popular edits have come from requests. However the number of requests I do compared to the number of overall requests is small, which means I must always mention the fact that time (I do work full time) and inspiration constraints may not allow me the opportunity to turn someones request into a Digital Visions Re-Edit.
In the end I am more than happy to take and consider any request made, and if inspiration and time come together maybe you'll see your track posted for all the world to see..... Recently I Re-Uploaded 2 older edits to two of my Soundcloud accounts:
Jermaine Jackson's 1979-80 US/UK Top 10 Hit "Let's Get Serious" and Cliff Richard's 1979-80 Top 10 International Hit "We Don't Talk Anymore". Both edits were done by me a few years back, just as I was getting back into digital editing....and they were done well enough that I felt they could be re-posted with only minor audio re-mastering. So far, based on Soundcloud responses, Mr Jackson's edit is the most popular (Like/Comment wise)...but both seem to be hits with my Followers. Edit Info....
